The loaded question! Generally, an unprocessed experience from the past, either yours or an ancestor’s. Most of us do not have the tools to properly deal with “negative” events. We have been given tools on schoolwork, housecare, driving, etc., but really don’t know what to do for an experience that deeply affects us. There are more and more books, modalities, therapies, etc. out there these days, but this is a relatively new development. Say, for example, that you are four years old. The dog barks, startling you while you are standing at the top of the stairs. You then fall down the stairs, land, crying and hurt. Your mother comforts you the best she knows, saying, “You’re ok.” Skip forward to adulthood. You have a fear of dogs, especially barking ones, you avoid stairs, you are in complete disconnect with your own feelings, and ambivalent toward your mother. All because of an event that wasn’t handled properly – through no fault of your own (you were four, remember?), and no fault of your mother’s either, as she didn’t know any better. Skip forward a generation or two. Your child or grandchild has debilitating fears, and no idea where they came from – well, they inherited them from you! Therefore, it has to be approached from the metaphysical perspective. This is obviously a very simple example, but I hope you understand the concept. Another reason is there may be an entity, Being, spirit (choose your term) that has attached to you. I will delve into that in more depth elsewhere.
