What is, or should be, a bra?
I think we can all agree it is supposed to support one’s breasts, no? Perhaps, in the process, make them appear more attractive, sexy, etc.; at the very least, a bra should keep the girls from hitting the floor.
Here is what a bra should NOT do: cut off the flow of lymph. Why is that important? Because – and this is an extremely cursory explanation – without lymph, you’re a goner and if it isn’t flowing freely, you’re risking good health. Ok, that was too cursory! Here’s more: lymph both feeds your cells and removes debris from the cells which is then filtered out in the lymph nodes (you know, those lumps you get in your neck when you have a bad cold?).
“Yea, yea, that’s all good and wonderful,
but what does that have to do with my bra?”
So glad you asked!
In my world, it’s all about living holistically, healing oneself in all areas, big and small. When your bra is too tight, or has an underwire, the lymph flow is hindered. Since lymph is everywhere in the body, any pressure on said body affects it (unlike blood, which is not so close to the surface, unless you’re really hot), so clothing can cut off lymph circulation. The metal in an underwire bra presses on two neurolymphatic reflex points, causing even more stress on the lymphatic system. Of course, synthetic materials are in and of themselves a concern, so cotton is king.
What do do?
If you can afford to run out and buy all new, perfect-fitted, underwire-less, natural fabric bras, do that.
If not:
- Adjust your bras best as you can to fit you better.
- Cut the stitching at one end of the compartment where the underwire is sewed into the bra, and slide the underwire out. Keep the bra.
- Wearing an underwire bra for special occasions is fine, so keep one or two, just don’t wear them every day, and certainly not for hours on end.
Whatever you do, don’t sleep in a bra! Either sleep nude or with loose-fitting, cotton pajamas – give the whole body the opportunity to breathe, to flow, to just BE.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, as always!
